The obelisk is a monolithic monument which has its origins in ancient Egypt. Together with the pyramids, it is one of the greatest expressions of Egyptian monumental art. It is characterized by the elongated and thin quadrangular shape, ending with a pyramidal tip.

This variety of red marble is extracted in Liguria, mainly in the municipality of Levanto, from which it takes its name.
